The story behind Bubbles X

I love macs… I always have. Thus, it was an object of consternation when my lovely wife fell for Windows Vista upon seeing their bubbles screensaver. Naturally, I wanted to keep the Mac at home. As you may have noticed from this site, I’ve been developing little things for the Mac OS and other platforms for many years, so the thought crossed my mind now and then to write a port of Bubbles for Mac OS X.

5 Weeks later, Bubbles X came into being … the Mac stayed, and now I have trouble getting to use it myself.

And with that, I present the Mac OS X port of the Bubbles screensaver. Give it a try and download it today… it is, after all, free to try!

Bubbles X Annoucements

Improvements with version 1.3:

  • Support for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
  • Improved bubble movement (bubbles are now more active)
  • Allowance for up to 100 bubbles (instead of 50 before)

    It’s a security “feature” in OS X that doesn’t allow the screen saver to capture the screen directly if you have password protection on the screen saver. The next version of Bubbles X will allow you to use a custom picture or color instead of the black, if you want to use password protection.

    Thank you for making Bubbles work with Snow Leopard, and quickly. I see the screen saver continues to improve, not that it wasn’t perfect the way it was. This was the best part of Vista.

    Thank you for the SL update. All this screensaver needs to be super perfect is the ability to stick different photos/pics in the bubbles at the same time.

    This is the only screensaver I use now. Absolutely love it. I’m wondering how difficult it would be to code for dual monitors? It works on dual monitors but as two separate screensavers. It would be nice if it spanned both so that the bubbles flowed from one screen to the other.
